The Meeting on the Lawn
Upon hearing in mid May 2010 that the dream of a functioning Woods Hole Market would not be realized this year, Woodsholians from all walks of life let out a disgruntled groan. But sometimes bad news brings folks together so well, it develops a rosy sheen despite itself.
On Thursday, May 27, a broad slice of the village met on the dappled lawn across from the post office to put their heads together and ask, “What now?” The purpose of the meeting was not to find a way to reopen the market (which can be yours for just 1.4 million), but to explore how we could make life easier without it.
A number of ideas were raised. Some folks suggested that we have a market truck come down at intervals, where people could buy everything from produce to toilet paper (the latter item having quickly become the poster child for things that are unavailable in Woods Hole). Others favored starting a Co-op, which would not only provide us our much sought-after conveniences, but reduce our reliance on and cash flow to outside sources for them. But with summer scratching at the back door, it was decided that these approaches might take more planning and time than we could spare.
So we decided to compile a list of the things that people would want most from a market if it WERE here.
Once we have a good sense of the community’s desires, this list will be presented to the Woods Hole Business Association. There, Business owners will discuss which of these items they can provide, and divvy up the task of supplying Woods Hole with its cold-cuts, painkillers and tampons. Tentatively called “The Village Pantry,” this collective effort will hopefully be the stopgap solution we need to carry us through the next frenzied months. Maps will be made available to help guide the shopper to the correct place of business.
Currently we are looking for suggestions from people on what they would most like to have available here in Woods Hole.
